11-Year-Old Shark Attack Victim Discharged After Leg Amputation

João Lucas Castor Nemezio Sales, an 11-year-old boy who suffered a shark bite and subsequent left leg amputation, has been discharged from the hospital after more than a month of treatment. The incident occurred on May 31st at Piedade beach in Jaboatão dos Guararapes, part of the Greater Recife area. João Lucas was initially admitted to the Hospital da Restauração (HR) for four days in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) before being transferred to the private Hospital Unimed on June 4th. During his hospitalization, he also sustained fractures to his left hand. Doctors reported that he had lost nearly all the blood in his body following the attack. He left the hospital in a wheelchair, accompanied by his father, Lucas Nemezio, and was celebrated by healthcare professionals as a "champion." The shark identified as responsible for the attack on João Lucas was a bull shark, according to the State Committee for Monitoring Shark Incidents (Cemit). Separately, on June 1st, 19-year-old Marcela Vitória de Lima Santos had her right leg severed by a shark at Boa Viagem beach in Recife. She was also discharged from the HR's ICU on the same day as João Lucas and remains hospitalized in a regular ward. Marcela Vitória, who is studying law, stated in a video that she is recovering well and awaiting further surgery, with medical professionals confirming her positive progress. The shark responsible for Marcela's attack was identified as a tiger shark.
