12-Year-Old Junior Firefighter Aids Unconscious Woman in Brazil's Federal District

A 12-year-old boy named Ivan Lucas, participating in the Junior Firefighter program, demonstrated remarkable presence of mind by assisting a woman found collapsed on a street in Ceilândia, Distrito Federal, Brazil. He recognized the victim's vital signs were compromised and instructed his parents to call the Samu (Unified Health Service). Ivan approached the woman, who was lying on the ground, to check for a pulse before emergency services arrived. The Junior Firefighter program, which has been running for nearly 30 years, serves children and adolescents aged 7 to 14 across 12 cities in the Federal District. After receiving initial aid from Ivan, the woman recovered and was able to sit up, expressing gratitude. Ivan's mother, Ivânia Márcia Dutra de Carvalho, recounted that they were returning from the market around 9 PM when they discovered the unconscious woman. She noted her son's lifelong fascination with firefighting, often expressing a desire to visit fire stations. The incident drew praise from Lieutenant Colonel Antônio Ferreira, an advisor for social programs at the Ceilândia Fire Department, who expressed pride in seeing the program's teachings applied effectively to help others.
