A Nepalese Flower's Journey: From Mystery to Meaning

The author recounts a peculiar experience in Nepal while on a work trip, staying at a hotel surrounded by mountains and a lush garden. He became fixated on a yellow flower blooming near a hedge, searching for its seeds to bring back for his wife, Rupa, who loves flowers. His attempts to inquire about the flower were hampered by his limited Hindi and fear of miscommunication, stemming from a past awkward encounter with a waiter in India. Despite his linguistic struggles, he eventually approached the hotel gardener, a local man, and, using a mix of Bengali and Hindi, explained his desire to find seeds for his wife.
