Adriana Calcanhotto to Discuss Poetry's Role in Songwriting at CCBB Event

Brazilian artist Adriana Calcanhotto will be the guest for the July edition of the CCBB Reading Club in Rio de Janeiro. The event, titled "Poetry and the Stage," is scheduled for tomorrow, July 15th, at 5:30 PM at the CCBB Rio de Janeiro. Calcanhotto, known for her extensive use of literary references in her music, will engage in a conversation moderated by poets Suzana Vargas and Ramon Nunes Mello. The discussion will focus on how her literary background influences her songwriting process. Calcanhotto has a long history of incorporating poetry into her work, with examples including her song "Vambora," which subtly references Manuel Bandeira's first poetry book, "A cinza das horas." Another song, "Motivos reais banais," was created using fragments from a poem by Waly Salomão, a poet with whom Calcanhotto has collaborated on several songs. She also co-wrote songs with Antonio Cicero, another prominent poet. Calcanhotto's musical output is rich with explicit and implicit nods to literature, even referencing characters like Capitu from Machado de Assis's "Dom Casmurro" in her song title "Olhos de onda." Beyond her music, Calcanhotto has also ventured into writing, with her 2008 book "Saga lusa" detailing her experiences during a Portuguese tour marked by a psychotic episode. She has also curated poetry collections, including the "Antologia incompleta da poesia contemporânea brasileira" in 2016, further demonstrating her commitment to promoting poetry.
