Amazonas Public Prosecutor's Office Investigates Alleged Police Brutality in Humaitá

The Public Prosecutor's Office of Amazonas (MPAM) has initiated a Military Police Inquiry to investigate an alleged incident of police brutality in Humaitá, Amazonas. The complaint, forwarded by the Public Defender's Office of Amazonas, details that a woman reportedly fainted inside a police vehicle on the morning of June 22 after being handcuffed for an extended period during an approach. The incident began when police responded to a complaint about a loud stereo system at a residence in the Conjunto Uruapiara neighborhood. According to the complaint, officers allegedly entered the home, used excessive physical force, and handcuffed the woman, leading to her collapse in the police car. Her husband also reportedly sustained a blow to the chest during the encounter. The woman's daughter allegedly witnessed the events, and a family member recorded the approach on video, though the complaint states police initially deleted the footage, which the family later recovered. Following the incident, the woman received medical attention at the Regional Hospital of Humaitá, presenting with headaches, jaw injuries, and bruises on her left arm, right elbow, and back. The MPAM has indicated that sufficient evidence exists to warrant a formal investigation into potential abuse of authority, military criminal offenses, and disciplinary infractions. The investigation aims to clarify the circumstances of the entry into the property, the use of handcuffs, the woman's transport in the vehicle, the seizure of the sound system, and the reported assaults. The case has also been referred to the General Inspectorate of the Amazonas Public Security System, with a request for the preservation of all audiovisual evidence, including bodycam footage and the recovered family video.
