Araraquara offers new Pneumo 20 vaccine to boost child protection against serious diseases

The Municipality of Araraquara has announced the availability of the Pneumo 20 (PN20) vaccine, free of charge at all local health units. This new immunization, incorporated into the National Vaccination Calendar by the Ministry of Health, enhances protection for young children against diseases caused by the Streptococcus pneumoniae bacterium. These illnesses include pneumonia, meningitis, and otitis, which can have severe consequences in early childhood. The vaccine is recommended for children under five years old who have not yet completed their vaccination schedule, as well as specific groups identified by the National Immunization Program (PNI). Currently, these specific groups include patients undergoing stem cell treatment and those receiving CART-Cell therapy. The PN20 vaccine provides coverage against 20 serotypes of the pneumococcal bacterium, an expansion from the previous Pneumo 10 vaccine used in the Unified Health System (SUS). Notably, it now includes serotypes 3, 6A, and 19A, which are significant contributors to invasive pneumococcal disease in Brazil. Vaccination is recognized as the primary method for preventing severe cases of these diseases, aiming to reduce hospitalizations, complications, and fatalities while strengthening community immunity. During the transition period, children starting vaccination at two months will receive the Pneumo 20 vaccine at two months, the Pneumo 10 vaccine at four months, and a Pneumo 20 booster dose between 12 and 15 months. Once existing Pneumo 10 stocks are depleted, the vaccination schedule will exclusively use the Pneumo 20 vaccine. Children who have already completed their Pneumo 10 schedule do not require an additional Pneumo 20 dose. The Municipal Health Secretariat urges parents and guardians to visit their local health unit to confirm their children's vaccination status and ensure their immunization records are up-to-date.
