Bahia Prosecutor Recommends Annulment of Iraquara City Council Election

The Public Prosecutor's Office of Bahia (MP-BA) has recommended the annulment of the election for the Board of Directors of the Municipal Chamber of Iraquara, a city in the Chapada Diamantina region. The election, intended for the 2025/2026 term, resulted in the third consecutive re-election of Suede de Jesus Neves Filho as president. This action contradicts a ruling by the Supreme Federal Court (STF), which permits only one successive re-election for such positions. The recommendation was issued on Monday, May 27th, by prosecutor Lucas Peixoto Valente. The MP-BA has also instructed the Chamber to hold a new election within five business days. Documents submitted by the Chamber confirm that Suede de Jesus Neves Filho previously presided over the body during the 2021/2022 and 2023/2024 terms. The STF's interpretation, solidified in the judgment of Direct Action of Unconstitutionality (ADI) No. 6.674, limits consecutive re-elections to a single term. Consequently, the new election must exclude candidates who have served as president in the two immediately preceding consecutive terms.
