Bangladesh Achieves Historic Success at 67th International Mathematical Olympiad in Shanghai

Bangladesh has made history at the 67th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) held in Shanghai, China, with all six participating students securing medals for the first time. The team clinched 1 silver and 5 bronze medals, earning Bangladesh the 39th position among 117 participating countries. This year's team achieved a total score of 121 points, marking the highest team score for the country in the competition's history. The event concluded with a grand closing and award ceremony on Monday afternoon at the Shanghai High School Grand Auditorium. Following tradition, the official IMO flag was handed over by the host country, China, to the authorities of Budapest, Hungary, the next host nation.

Mohammad Rayhan Siddiqui, a 12th-grade student from Chittagong College, earned Bangladesh's sole silver medal with 23 points out of 42. The bronze medalists include Tahsin Khan (22 points) from Anand Mohan College in Mymensingh, M. Jamiul Hossain (21 points), an SSC candidate from Rajuk Uttara Model College, Jawad Hameem Chowdhury (19 points) from Dhaka Imperial College, Monami Zaman (19 points) from Viqarunnisa Noon School and College, and Mohammad Marjuk Rahman (17 points) from Chittagong Cantonment English School and College.

This marks Bangladesh's 22nd participation in the IMO. To date, the country has won 1 gold, 8 silver, 45 bronze medals, and 47 honorable mentions. The competition saw 55 students awarded gold medals for scoring 29 or more points, 105 receiving silver for 23 or more, and 189 earning bronze for 16 or more. Seven students achieved a perfect score of 42, including Alex Chiu from the UK, who set a record by winning his fifth consecutive gold medal. China secured first place as a team with 232 points, followed by the USA in second with 207 points, and Russia in third with 196 points. A total of 666 students from 117 countries and regions participated in this year's competition.
