Belo Horizonte Vehicle Thefts Surge: Over 4,000 Incidents in First Half of 2026

Belo Horizonte recorded a significant increase in vehicle thefts and robberies, with 4,194 incidents reported in the first half of 2026. This data, released by the Public Security Observatory of the State Secretariat of Justice and Public Security, translates to an average of 23 vehicles stolen per day. The rising crime rate has instilled a sense of insecurity among drivers, including Silvana Rangel Sernizon Vasconcelos, a cashier, and her husband, Vanildo Roberto Vasconcelos, a body shop worker, who were victims of a car theft. They expressed deep disappointment and financial strain, as their recently purchased car, still being financed and uninsured, was stolen. The incident occurred during a robbery at a car wash in the São Francisco neighborhood, Pampulha region, where three men on a motorcycle invaded the premises and stole three vehicles, including the couple's car. The thieves reportedly covered the license plates to obscure their identity. The couple has filed a police report and faces the prospect of continuing to pay for a vehicle they cannot use for the remaining two years of their loan. A witness at the car wash described the terrifying experience, noting the perpetrators' instructions to remain still and avoid eye contact while they tampered with the vehicles.
