Brava Island: Population Demographics and Literacy Rates Revealed

The island of Brava has a population of 5,762 inhabitants and boasts a literacy rate exceeding 91%, according to data from the National Statistics Institute (INE). The largest demographic group, representing 37.5% of the population, consists of individuals aged 35 to 64. Younger age groups include 0-14 year olds at 28.0%, 15-24 year olds at 13.5%, and 25-34 year olds at 12.4%, while those aged 65 and over constitute 8.6%. The overall literacy rate stands at 91.1%, with a remarkable 98.8% among the 15-24 age bracket. However, 5.8% of the population has never attended school, and the average years of study for those aged five and above is 7.1 years.

In terms of employment, the occupation rate for individuals aged 15 and over is 52.5%, with a low unemployment rate of 1.9%. A significant challenge is that 24.3% of young people aged 15 to 24 are neither employed nor in education or training. Brava is home to 1,746 households, with 54.6% headed by men and 45.4% by women, averaging 2.6 people per household. Regarding living conditions, 97.7% have electricity, 87.3% have running water, and 89.6% have sanitation facilities. Cooking fuel predominantly relies on gas (91.7%), with only 6.3% using firewood.
