Brazil's Electoral Court Enhances Accessibility Features for October Voting

Brazil's Superior Electoral Court (TSE) has introduced new accessibility features for the upcoming October elections, aiming to increase voter autonomy. President of the TSE, Minister Kassio Nunes Marques, emphasized the electronic voting machine as a cornerstone of Brazilian democracy. Nearly 564,000 machines will be deployed for over 158 million eligible voters in 2026. These modernized machines will include enhanced tools for voters with disabilities, a group that has grown by over 40% since 2022, now comprising almost 2 million individuals. For those with low vision, the machines will display larger text using a new font. Visually impaired voters will benefit from an improved synthesized voice system that audibly announces the office, entered numbers, and the chosen candidate, allowing voters to follow each step of the process via headphones. The TSE is also introducing a feature for deaf voters who are not literate in written Portuguese but understand Brazilian Sign Language (Libras). A narrator on the screen will repeat the information displayed in text, translating it into Libras. The TSE plans to demonstrate the entire electronic voting process throughout the week, from machine assembly to sealed delivery at polling stations. Minister Marques stated that the goal is to enhance public understanding of the electoral process and reaffirm the robustness, auditability, and technological evolution of the voting system.
