Brazil's Health Agency Denies Reports of Plastic or Oil in Eggs

Brazil's National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) has officially stated that it has not issued any warnings regarding the presence of plastic or petroleum in eggs sold in the country. The agency clarified that no eggs containing these substances, or made from them, have been approved for consumption in Brazil. This statement comes in response to claims circulating on social media in recent days, which allege, without evidence, that Anvisa identified artificial eggs produced with plastic and petroleum derivatives. Anvisa has refuted these claims, emphasizing that the oversight of poultry farms and egg production falls under the purview of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa). The agency advises consumers to purchase eggs only from inspected establishments, ensuring the product label includes origin, batch, and expiration date information. Proper storage recommendations include refrigeration and thorough cooking. Anvisa also suggests consumers avoid washing eggs before storing them, as the natural protective film on the shell helps prevent bacterial entry, such as salmonella. Washing should only occur immediately before preparation if the surface is dirty.
