Brazil's Senate Approves Bill to Elevate Cefet-MG to Federal Technological University

The Federal Senate in Brazil has approved a bill to transform the Federal Center for Technological Education of Minas Gerais (Cefet-MG) into a federal technological university. This proposal, which has been in the legislative process since 2023, represents the culmination of decades of effort by the institution to achieve this recognition. Cefet-MG, which began offering undergraduate courses in 1972, currently provides the highest number of engineering vacancies in the state. The institution offers a wide range of programs, including 44 technical courses, 29 undergraduate degrees, 14 master's programs, and seven doctoral programs. In the past year, 14,775 students were enrolled across its nine municipal campuses. The faculty is highly qualified, with 71% holding doctorates and 27% holding master's degrees. The transformation aims to enhance Cefet-MG's access to resources for education and research, improve its personnel and budget structures, and qualify for funding opportunities exclusively available to universities. The new entity, tentatively named the Federal Technological University of Minas Gerais (UTFMG), will maintain its technical courses while expanding its higher education offerings to include undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing education programs, alongside applied technology research. The bill, championed by federal deputy Patrus Ananias, also includes the Federal Center for Technological Education Celso Suckow da Fonseca (Cefet-RJ) in this transformation. If sanctioned by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva by July 30, the Ministry of Education will have 90 days to establish the necessary regulations for UTFMG's implementation. All current students, faculty, and staff will be automatically transferred, and the institution's assets will be incorporated into the new university structure.
