Brazilian bird photo transformed into award-winning symphony at Cannes Lions

A photograph of birds perched on electrical wires, taken by Brazilian photographer Paulo Pinto in 2009 in Santana do Livramento, Rio Grande do Sul, has won a Gold Lion at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. The image, initially captured during a casual visit to his hometown, was inspired by Pinto's mother, Glacy Pinto, who suggested he photograph birds being fed by a neighbor. Pinto observed the birds lined up on five wires, remarking that it resembled musical notation. He sent the photo to a newspaper where it caught the eye of advertising executive Jarbas Agnelli. Agnelli was struck by the visual similarity to a musical score, with the five wires mirroring the five lines of a staff. He then translated the image into a musical arrangement, interpreting the birds' positions as notes and chords to create an orchestral piece. Agnelli contacted Pinto, who provided a wider shot with more birds, allowing Agnelli to expand the composition. This musical interpretation, combined with the photograph, was developed into a video that visually demonstrated how the birds translated into musical notes. The video gained significant traction online. Years later, the Africa Creative agency and the Brazilian Association of Electric Energy Distributors (Abradee) commissioned a larger project called the "Sinfonia da Energia" (Symphony of Energy). This involved using multiple photographs of birds, sourced from various locations across Brazil, to generate melodies for different instruments, creating a complex musical puzzle. For this project, Pinto and Agnelli returned to Santana do Livramento, but sadly, Pinto's mother and the neighbor had passed away, and the birds were no longer present on the wires. The "Sinfonia da Energia" ultimately incorporated 60 to 70 images from different birdwatchers and photographers nationwide, culminating in a symphony that brought Brazil a Gold Lion award.
