Cabo Verde Enhances Ebola Preparedness at Ports and Airports

Cabo Verde is strengthening its response and surveillance capabilities against the Ebola virus at its ports and airports. Maria da Luz Lima, President of the National Institute of Public Health (INSP), stated that while there are currently no suspected Ebola cases in the country, ongoing international travel, including with affected African nations, necessitates constant vigilance. Despite the World Health Organization classifying the archipelago as low-risk for Ebola introduction, authorities deem it crucial to maintain readiness due to the international context. Lima highlighted that the Ebola outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda underscore the importance of preparedness for all countries. She emphasized that entry points, such as air and sea borders, are potential pathways for disease introduction, requiring preparedness at all levels. The INSP president explained that a multisectoral preparation plan includes enhancing laboratory capacity, ensuring hospital readiness, and training health, airport, and maritime professionals for early detection of suspected cases from endemic areas. This training will conclude with a simulation exercise to test response mechanisms, communication flows, and coordination among involved entities. The goal is to ensure everyone knows their role and how to act in a real-life scenario. Lima concluded that investing in preparedness is essential for reducing costs and increasing the effectiveness of responses to health emergencies, as early detection and well-prepared professionals and populations lead to more efficient outcomes. The workshop involves various ministries and agencies, including Health, Agriculture and Environment, Civil Protection, and aviation authorities, adopting a "One Health" approach.
