Cabo Verde PM Alleges 'Coup Attempt Disguised as Opposition'

Cabo Verde's Prime Minister Francisco Carvalho has expressed deep concern over the nation's current political climate, characterizing recent events as an attack on democratic institutions and a "coup attempt disguised as opposition." Speaking to the nation, Carvalho stated that these actions, often masked as institutional processes or attempts to cast doubt on elected officials, are a disgrace to Cabo Verde. He emphasized that these actions not only target his government but also undermine one of Africa's most respected and stable democracies, which has built its international reputation on institutional stability, democratic maturity, and peaceful power transitions. The Prime Minister warned of the negative impact on Cabo Verde's external image, drawing a parallel to the positive international projection achieved by the national football team. Carvalho accused political adversaries of seeking to achieve through other means what they could not win at the ballot box, asserting that those who foster instability and conflict are failing the Cabo Verdean people. He recalled a pre-election strategy by a "radical group" to prevent his ascent to power, a strategy he believes is now being pursued through different avenues. Despite facing similar attacks since his time as Mayor of Praia, Carvalho pledged to respond with serenity and determination. He affirmed his respect for the judicial system and pledged full cooperation with the Public Ministry's investigations, trusting that truth will prevail, while vowing to expose attempts at political instrumentalization of judicial matters. The Prime Minister assured that his government will remain focused on its mandate: reducing the cost of living, improving inter-island connectivity, enhancing public services, and fulfilling promises to the people. He stated the government's response would be through diligent work, not political confrontation, as Cabo Verde deserves institutional peace and improved living conditions. Carvalho also criticized the MpD party, urging them to account for the past decade's governance and alleged public fund mismanagement, citing a specific land registry project where significant funds were reportedly spent without completion. He questioned the origin of recent accusations, suggesting their drafting in specific offices could reveal hypocrisy and cynicism that marked previous administrations.
