Cabo Verde's interim MpD leader claims positive governance despite acknowledged shortcomings

Eurico Monteiro, interim president of the MpD party in Cabo Verde, stated that the country was left in a good state globally, despite acknowledging specific governance weaknesses. He made these remarks in anticipation of the upcoming State of the Nation debate, which he described as an atypical moment where the governing party typically presents a positive outlook, contrasting with the opposition's usual critique. Monteiro admitted that while the government made efforts in various areas, there were failures, particularly in inter-island air and maritime transport, which negatively impacted public perception. He also addressed the health sector, noting progress such as increased primary care coverage and reduced child mortality, alongside technical advancements like dialysis centers. However, he recognized that negative perceptions were amplified by isolated incidents, creating an unfavorable image of the health system. Regarding unemployment, Monteiro cited national statistics showing positive performance but highlighted concerns about over 30,000 young people outside education, training, and the job market, a complex issue involving education, families, and youth motivation. He also acknowledged the need for a more significant increase in the minimum wage and recognized that poverty levels, though reduced, remained a concern requiring firm action. Monteiro pointed to sustained economic growth above potential for three consecutive years, as recognized by international institutions like the World Bank, IMF, and Bank of Cabo Verde, as evidence of the country being on the right path. He conceded that income distribution policies needed adjustments, with planned measures for 2027, and that public sector wage increases aimed to incentivize the private sector. Despite acknowledging fragilities, he maintained that the overall trajectory was positive, driven by economic growth, investment, and a stable business environment, with tourism showing strong demand. Monteiro concluded by emphasizing that while improvements were possible in certain sectors, the MpD had left the country in a fundamentally sound condition and expressed hope that the new government would find solutions to the remaining challenges.
