Cameroon Opposition Leader Proposes Referendum Strategy for 2027 Elections

Ahead of the 2027 legislative and municipal elections in Cameroon, opposition figure Abdouraman Hamadou Babba has proposed an alternative to traditional coalition-building. Babba, who has analyzed the persistent failure of opposition coalitions since 1992, believes that supporters of change are a majority across all social strata and political parties, including the ruling RDPC. He argues that these supporters have the capacity to unite and vote for candidates embodying change. Instead of forming what he deems an "impossible coalition of political parties," Babba suggests leveraging existing energy and time by reframing the upcoming elections. His proposal is to transform the legislative and municipal elections into a referendum on the Biya-RDPC regime, essentially a vote "FOR or AGAINST" the current government. To facilitate this, he advocates for a framework to unite all proponents of change with the singular goal of ending the "dictatorship" and establishing democracy. This initiative, named "REMONTADA DU PEUPLE," is envisioned as a non-partisan movement with a transversal, participatory, and non-hierarchical structure, aiming to organize change supporters on a constituency-by-constituency basis to select candidates for the 2027 elections.
