Cape Verde Minister Urges Investment in Cabnave Shipyard to Boost Maritime Economy

João do Carmo, the Minister of Maritime Economy for Cape Verde, has emphasized the urgent need for investment in the Cabnave shipyard, located on São Vicente island. His statement followed his first official visit to the facility, which he deemed strategically vital for the nation's maritime sector. A primary concern identified is the shipyard's main ramp, currently operating at less than 50% of its designed capacity. This limitation prevents it from accommodating larger vessels present in Cape Verde, necessitating immediate, albeit potentially phased, investment in the infrastructure. The minister pledged that the government, alongside its partners, will mobilize efforts to restore the ramp's full functionality, aiming to bring the shipyard back to its original operational capacity. He highlighted Cabnave's significance for São Vicente, the broader maritime economy, and shipowners, noting that national shipowners face difficulties accessing foreign shipyards in locations like the Canary Islands or Senegal. Therefore, the state has an obligation to ensure Cabnave can meet domestic market demands. Do Carmo also criticized the previous government for neglecting the shipyard over the past decade, suggesting a misplaced focus on other potential investments while Cabnave's essential services were overlooked. The revitalization of Cabnave is a key component of the government's strategy to establish São Vicente as a major hub for the maritime economy in Cape Verde and the wider sub-region. Regarding the maritime transport concession with CV Interilhas, the minister assured that the government will honor state commitments while rigorously overseeing the company's adherence to its obligations.
