Cariacica Residents Fund and Repair Street at Risk of Collapse

Residents of the Tabajara neighborhood in Cariacica, Espírito Santo, have taken matters into their own hands to repair Rua Bandeirantes, a street identified by the Civil Defense as being at risk of collapse and soil erosion. Facing inaction from the municipality, the community organized a crowdfunding campaign, raising approximately R$ 1,850 to purchase materials. Volunteers from the neighborhood provided the labor to carry out the necessary repairs. Residents expressed frustration with the lack of municipal support, highlighting that the Civil Defense confirmed the risks but deemed the responsibility to be with the Municipal Public Works Department. Concerns were raised about the safety of children and the elderly due to the potential for landslides. This is not the first time the community has attempted to address the issue, with recurring problems over the years exacerbated by rainfall, leading to significant road deterioration and access difficulties. Some residents have also independently installed sewage systems due to the lack of basic infrastructure. A Civil Defense report from April confirmed soil erosion, loss of sub-pavement support, partial pavement collapse, and inadequate drainage, among other issues. The Cariacica City Hall acknowledged receiving the report and stated that the situation involves a boundary between private property and the street. They have forwarded the report to the Public Works Department and sent a technical team to assess the situation and determine necessary interventions.
