Chile's Growing HIV Crisis: A Call for Openness and Prevention

Chile is facing a significant increase in HIV cases, with 91,000 people currently living with the virus, an 86% rise over the past decade. This escalating problem is often overlooked due to a societal tendency to suppress discussions about it, which in turn hinders prevention efforts. The author, Osvaldo Artaza, Dean of the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences at Universidad de Las Américas, argues that this chronic issue no longer garners urgency or media attention, despite its continued impact on the quality of life for thousands. Artaza emphasizes that direct conversations about sex, risk, and prevention are crucial, likening the honesty required to how other health issues are discussed.
