Chilean Lord Kiltrow Whisky: A Unique Taste of Patagonia

Chile possesses ideal conditions to become a global whisky powerhouse, similar to Scotland, Japan, or Australia. Factors include clean air and water, diverse climates, abundant barrels from its vineyards, and even copper for stills, all complemented by the Patagonia brand. Despite these advantages, few have fully capitalized on them. Lord Kiltrow, a single malt and single cask whisky produced by Barking Chilean Spirits Company in Casablanca, stands out. This distillery was founded in 2022 by six partners, including master distiller Tomás Cifuentes, a Chilean oenologist trained in Australia. While they produce notable gins, their signature product is this whisky, named with a youthful and irreverent flair. This naming reflects its pioneering status in Chile and its relatively short aging period of just over a year, resulting in a cask strength of 45%. The whisky offers a distinctive flavor profile, evoking the Central Valley rather than extreme climates. Notes include 'mote con huesillo' (a traditional Chilean drink), red wine (from aging in Cabernet-Sauvignon oak barrels from Viña Aquitania), and 'sopaipillas pasadas' (a sweet pastry). It is suggested to pair with sweets from Curacaví, goat cheese with nuts, or a slow-cooked beef dish. The hope is that this unique offering will encourage more whisky experimentation within Chile's diverse geography.
