Constitutional Revision Effort Undermined by Government's Lack of Credibility

The recent discussion within the Constitutional Revision Committee in Greece has starkly revealed that a government's institutional credibility is a prerequisite for a successful constitutional amendment process. This credibility is currently at an all-time low due to numerous, overt violations and circumventions of the constitution that have occurred previously. The committee's proceedings demonstrated that without this foundational trust, any initiative to revise the constitution is unlikely to be productive or achieve its intended goals. The government's actions have eroded the public and political confidence necessary for such a significant undertaking. Consequently, the debate highlighted a critical disconnect between the legislative ambition and the government's capacity to lead it effectively. The process has been hampered by the perception that the government itself does not adhere to the constitutional framework it seeks to amend. This situation raises serious questions about the legitimacy and potential impact of any proposed changes. The effectiveness of the committee's work is therefore compromised from the outset.
