Democrata Party Nominates Jeremias Cosmo for Pernambuco Governor

The Democrata party has officially nominated Jeremias Cosmo, also known as Professor Jeremias, as its candidate for the governorship of Pernambuco. This decision was formalized during the party's convention held on Sunday, May 26th, at the Jangadeiro Hotel in Boa Viagem, Recife. During the same convention, Gilvan Costa was nominated as the candidate for the Senate, with Siméia Carvalho as his second alternate. The party indicated that the candidates for vice-governor and the first Senate alternate are yet to be determined. Jeremias Cosmo, a state school teacher and Bank of Brazil employee, also holds a leadership position within the Bank Workers' Union of Mata Sul. Originally from Palmares and raised in Ribeirão, both located in the Mata Sul region of Pernambuco, Cosmo has a background rooted in social and labor movements. The convention was attended by Carlos Alberto, the state president of Democrata, and Suêd Haidar, the national president. In his address, Cosmo highlighted his life experiences and work in education, public service, and union representation. He also advocated for reforms in public security and voiced criticism of current authorities, identifying himself as a supporter of the right-wing and former President Jair Bolsonaro. The Democrata party also announced 23 candidacies for proportional elections, including 16 for state deputy and nine for federal deputy. Cosmo, born in Palmares in 1980, has a history of political engagement, having previously run for state deputy with PSOL in 2018 and for city councilor in Ribeirão with PP in 2020. He also served as a candidate for vice-mayor of Ribeirão in 2024.
