Driver Dies in Head-On Collision Between Car and Truck on BR-230 in Maranhão

A 40-year-old driver, identified as Michel Platiny Lopes Alencar, died early Sunday, May 5th, following a head-on collision between his car and a truck on the BR-230 highway. The incident occurred in the stretch between Balsas and Riachão in the southern region of Maranhão state. Alencar was traveling from Balsas towards Riachão when the collision took place, resulting in his immediate death at the scene. The truck was carrying wood chips, and the impact caused it to overturn and block the roadway, with part of its cargo spilling onto the highway. The truck driver was not present when emergency teams arrived, reportedly having left the scene shortly after the accident. The BR-230 remained closed for over five hours due to the accident, significantly impacting traffic between Balsas and Riachão until the road was cleared. The truck was eventually righted and removed from the roadside on Monday, May 6th. The Federal Highway Police (PRF) are investigating the causes of the crash. The BR-230 has seen 42 accidents and 13 fatalities since the beginning of January, with the PRF noting that most incidents occur within urban areas, particularly on weekends.
