P. suffers from a severe chronic psychotic disorder and an intellectual disability, but the judge ruled he was "strongly diminished in accountability" rather than fully unaccountable, as he was capable of controlling his actions during the stabbing. The sentence exceeds the prosecution's recommendation of six years and TBS, with the judge citing the severity of the crime and the profound, irreparable suffering inflicted on the victim's family and the community's sense of safety.
