European Socialists Demand Clarity on Schengen Border Suspensions

European Social Democrats have formally requested European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to immediately clarify the rules governing member states' suspension of the Schengen Area. This call follows recent events in Ceuta, where internal border controls were reportedly reintroduced. The group, specifically through Vice-President Ana Catarina Mendes, questioned the objective grounds for these border reintroductions, especially after Von der Leyen confirmed no significant movements from Ceuta to mainland Spain or the EU. They urged the Commission to verify if legal conditions were met and to act as the guardian of EU treaties if they were not. The Social Democrats expressed concern over the deliberate misrepresentation of the situation by certain governments for political gain, criticizing right-wing and far-right parties for advocating border closures instead of solidarity with Spain. They view Italy's decision as a dangerous precedent that could allow for the manipulation of European law to serve specific political agendas, undermining the principle of shared European responsibility. The Party of European Socialists (PES) also defended the Spanish government, condemning widespread confusion fueled by false claims about Spain's migration policy and the legal implications of a recent Spanish Supreme Court ruling. They specifically denounced coordinated disinformation campaigns amplified by actors from the United States, Israel, and the European far-right.
