Fire Engulfs Herbaceous Vegetation in Saquarema Environmental Reserve

A fire broke out on Monday night, August 3rd, in the Massambaba environmental preservation area in Vilatur, Saquarema, located in the Lagos Region of Rio de Janeiro. The flames consumed herbaceous vegetation, specifically the cattail plant, which typically grows near water bodies. The incident was visible from various parts of the city. Aerial footage captured by a local resident on Tuesday morning, August 4th, showed active flames within the reserve. The Fire Department estimates that over 95% of forest fires are caused by human activity, whether accidental or intentional. In Saquarema, 86 vegetation fires were recorded between January 1st and August 3rd of this year, a decrease from the 177 incidents during the same period last year. Despite this reduction, fires continue to damage protected areas, harm wildlife, and pose risks to residents through proximity of flames and smoke-induced respiratory issues. Authorities advise the public against conducting burns for land clearing, discarding lit cigarette butts, especially near roads, and caution against making bonfires or releasing balloons.
