Floating School Illuminates Lives of Nomadic Manta Community Children

Children from the Manta community in Laxmipur, Bangladesh, are receiving education at the "Meghnapar Dhibar Alor Pathshala," a school run by the First আলো Trust. The Manta people are a nomadic community who have lived on boats along the Meghna River for over a century without permanent land. Their lives have historically been marked by neglect and deprivation, with births, deaths, and burials all occurring on their vessels or in unmarked riverine graves. However, this floating school, established on the riverbanks near Mojuchowdhury Hat, is bringing a new era of hope. Children who would typically be helping their fathers fish or spending time in dark corners of boats are now attending school. They receive free books, notebooks, pens, and uniforms, fostering dreams of a brighter future under the dedicated care of their teachers. The head teacher, Md. Zohirul Islam, stated that natural adversities and extreme poverty no longer prevent children from attending school, and the school grounds are filled with their cheerful sounds each morning. Local education enthusiasts view this initiative not just as operating a school, but as a unique effort to reintegrate a neglected, marginalized population into mainstream society and build a more humane community. The school is acting as a lighthouse, breaking down a century-old wall of neglect to build a future for Manta children.
