Former Brazilian Footballer Saul Muniz Dies in Scooter Accident in Ireland

Saul Muniz, a 40-year-old former Brazilian footballer, has died following an accident involving an electric scooter in Galway, Ireland. Muniz, who had a career playing for clubs in the interior of São Paulo, Brazil, had moved to Ireland in 2012 to study and start a new life. He transitioned from professional sports, impacted by knee and ankle injuries, to become a barber. He lived in Ireland for over a decade, first in Dublin and later in Galway, where he built a successful career and a diverse network of friends. His sister, Patrícia Borges, described him as a generous and humanitarian individual deeply committed to helping others and involved in social projects. Muniz was a volunteer for the NGO You in Africa, which focuses on combating hunger and promoting education for African children. In a testament to his generosity, his family authorized the donation of his organs, including his heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, blood vessels, and heart valves, to benefit other lives. Friends in Ireland are organizing a memorial service and wake before his cremation, after which his ashes are expected to be brought back to Brazil. Muniz, who was originally from Minas Gerais but moved to Ribeirão Preto in 1995, began his football career in the youth divisions of Comercial de Ribeirão Preto. He also played for Francana, Jaboticabal, and Guariba before retiring from the sport due to persistent injuries. He had been planning to visit his family in Brazil at the end of the year, having not seen them for approximately four years due to the pandemic.
