Former domestic worker becomes a Lieutenant in the Military Police after years of study

Lusinete Bispo Araújo, who began working as a domestic employee at just 12 years old, has achieved the rank of First Lieutenant in the Tocantins Military Police. After more than a decade in domestic service, she passed the Military Police public examination in 2001 at the age of 26, securing a stable career. Her commitment to education continued, and in April of this year, she was promoted to the officer rank. Araújo's story highlights the challenges faced by domestic workers in Brazil, a profession with roots in the country's historical context, as noted by sociologist Solange Nascimento. Nascimento explained that the model of women living in their employers' homes blurred personal and professional lives, a practice stemming from the era of slavery. The sociologist also emphasized the role of public policies, such as access to education and affirmative action in public service, in creating social mobility for historically marginalized groups.
