Former Mayor Odelmo Leão Dies; Labor Court Reverses Dismissal for 4 Extra Minutes

Odelmo Leão, a prominent political figure in Uberlândia, Brazil, passed away at the age of 80 on Monday, July 27th. Leão served as mayor of Uberlândia for four terms, between 2005-2012 and 2017-2024, and was re-elected twice. He also held positions as a federal deputy for Minas Gerais for five terms and as the State Secretary of Agriculture in 2003. His death was confirmed by the Hospital Mater Dei Santa Genoveva and his wife, federal deputy Ana Paula Junqueira. The Municipality of Uberlândia declared seven days of official mourning in his honor.

Additionally, a newborn named Bento Vasconcelos Dutra received an unprecedented intrauterine treatment in Brazil for Gestational Aloimmune Liver Disease (GALD). The rare and severe condition occurs when maternal antibodies attack the fetus's liver, potentially causing fatal liver failure. The family, having lost a previous child to GALD, opted for weekly immunoglobulin infusions for the mother starting at 14 weeks of gestation to prevent the recurrence of the attack on the baby's liver.
