Former PM Maleiane: Mozambique's unity and technical training key for development

Former Prime Minister Adriano Maleiane stated that Mozambique has made significant progress in the 51 years since its National Independence, particularly in nation-building. Speaking at the independence anniversary celebrations, Maleiane recalled the immense challenges at the time of independence, including an illiteracy rate of approximately 97%. He highlighted President Samora Machel's crucial literacy campaign, emphasizing the serious work required to lay the foundation for development. Despite decades of difficulties, including repeated armed conflicts, Maleiane believes Mozambique's preserved unity is one of its greatest national achievements. He noted that the country experienced only about a year and a half of peace after independence, with conflict beginning in mid-1976, making current unity a considerable victory. Addressing current challenges, Maleiane stressed the importance of strengthening Mozambican identity and fostering peaceful coexistence. He called for an end to all forms of violence, verbal or armed, to unite citizens in national construction. Furthermore, Maleiane emphasized technical and vocational education as vital for leveraging national resources and potential, concluding that investing in education and technical training is essential to convert Mozambique's wealth into development.
