Forró Singer Walkyria Santos Duets with Mother Who Suffers from Dementia

Brazilian forró artist Walkyria Santos recently recorded a special performance with her mother, Marinalva Bezerra Santos, 67, for her new project titled “Wal com Vida.” Marinalva, who suffered a stroke in July of last year, has developed dementia, a common sequela of the illness, which often causes her to not recognize her own daughter. During the recording session in Recife (PE) last year, Marinalva unexpectedly joined Walkyria on stage while the singer was performing "Um Dia de Domingo," a classic song that holds significant meaning for both of them. Walkyria, seeing her mother's emotional reaction, requested that security allow her onto the stage, and they sang the song together. This poignant moment was captured and released on Friday, November 17th. Walkyria explained that the song choice was deeply personal, recalling her mother singing it while doing laundry on Sundays in their hometown of Monteiro, Paraíba. The "Wal com Vida" project, conceived for theatrical venues, is being recorded across various capitals in the Northeast, marking a departure from Walkyria's three-decade career in more traditional forró shows. She previously performed with the band Magníficos and has been a solo artist since 2016, accustomed to high-energy performances with dancers and choreography. Santos expressed that while her usual shows remain emotional, the theater setting offers a novel experience, making her feel nervous before performances and exhausted afterward. The project's repertoire features reinterpretations of songs that shaped her artistic identity, including works by artists like Fábio Jr. and early career hits. It also includes collaborations with guests such as Daniel Diau of Calcinha Preta and Yara Tchê of Seu Desejo. Santos stated that the project is a way to express love to people while they are still alive, a sentiment she was able to convey directly to her mother during their performance in Recife.
