Four friends from Tocantins die in Maranhão highway accident while en route to Piauí vacation

Four friends from Araguaína, Tocantins, tragically died in a highway accident on BR-226 in Maranhão while on their way to a vacation in Piauí. The victims, identified as Helena Ferreira de Freitas, Núbia Alves Brito, Fátima Boaventura, and Marinalva Alves da Silva, were close friends who had planned the trip to celebrate a reunion. According to Rebeca Silva, niece of victim Marinalva Alves da Silva, Marinalva, who resided in Ireland, had recently returned to Brazil to visit family and embark on this vacation with her friends to Barra Grande, on the coast of Piauí. The Maranhão Fire Department suspects the driver lost control during an attempted overtaking maneuver, causing the vehicle to plunge into a lake alongside the highway near Grajaú, Maranhão. Fátima Boaventura, a hairdresser and salon owner in Araguaína, is remembered by friends as a resilient woman, a great mother and friend who cherished life. Helena Ferreira de Freitas was an active member of the Universidade da Maturidade (UMA), an extension project of the Universidade Federal do Tocantins (UFT), where she was known for her joy and affection. The Federal University of Tocantins issued a statement mourning Helena's death and acknowledging the positive impact she had on the academic community.
