French Teenager Sentenced to 18 Years for Stabbing School Assistant to Death

A 15-year-old boy in France has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for fatally stabbing a 31-year-old educational assistant at his school in Nogent, near Dyon. The incident occurred last year during a bag check implemented to prevent weapons from being brought onto school grounds. The student, who was 14 at the time of the crime, had reportedly stated his intention to stab a random school employee. The educational assistant, who was helping with the bag checks near the entrance, was killed in the attack, and a police officer was also injured. Due to his young age, the trial was conducted behind closed doors by a juvenile judge. The prosecution had sought a 20-year sentence, and the court found the teenager displayed no "empathy, remorse, or regret" during proceedings. This sentence is unusually severe for a minor in France, where mitigating circumstances typically reduce sentences for juveniles. However, the court cited the extreme gravity of the offense, the lack of remorse, premeditation, and the suspect's prior history of violence against classmates as factors justifying the harsh penalty. Following the incident, French President Macron called for a ban on social media for children under 15, suggesting it desensitizes them to violence. The suspect reportedly has no diagnosed mental disorder but is a fan of violent video games.
