From Street Homelessness to Hot Sauce Entrepreneur: A Story of Sobriety and Success

D'jã Diego Cobos Melo, known as Diego El Cabron, a 50-year-old entrepreneur in Presidente Prudente, São Paulo, has transformed his life from homelessness and addiction to creating a successful hot sauce business. He travels daily on his bicycle, wearing a uniform he considers part of his identity, selling 25 varieties of hot sauces, preserves, and powdered peppers door-to-door. His greatest achievement, however, is reaching six years of sobriety on July 12th, a milestone he celebrates more than his business success. Before entrepreneurship, Melo battled chemical dependency, attempted suicide, and lived on the streets for approximately eight years. He attributes his recovery to a commitment to living 'one day at a time' and a desire to reconnect with his son. His culinary skills, learned from his mother and grandmother, became his path to redemption after a period of profound loss and addiction. He survived his time on the streets by selling poems, books, and sweets at traffic lights, engaging with hundreds of people daily. A pivotal moment came on his son's birthday, when he realized the extent of the time lost due to his addiction. Meeting Heloísa, who supported people experiencing homelessness, marked a turning point, encouraging him to pursue his cooking talent. The idea to sell his grandmother's 25-year-old hot sauce recipe, originally named 'El Cabron' as a way to transform a negative term into something positive, evolved into his current business. He now visits restaurants, bars, and individual clients, valuing the direct contact as integral to his business and personal journey. Melo hopes his story inspires others facing addiction, emphasizing that change is possible and that every life has purpose.
