Gas Leak Causes Fire, Severely Burning Woman in Maceió

A 51-year-old woman sustained severe injuries, with approximately 70% of her body burned, following a fire caused by a cooking gas leak in her Maceió residence on Wednesday, May 15th. The incident, which began in the kitchen, resulted in burns classified as first and second-degree. Military firefighters from Alagoas (CBMAL) responded to the scene, where the gas leak had already been contained. The victim received initial medical attention before being transported to the State General Hospital (HGE). Images from the aftermath revealed significant damage to the kitchen, including a collapsed tiled roof and scorched walls and belongings. A fire department official emphasized that such accidents are preventable through simple safety measures. These include ensuring gas cylinders, hoses, and pressure regulators are certified and within their expiration dates. In the event of a leak, residents are advised to open doors and windows, avoid operating electrical switches, and immediately contact the fire department at 193. Additionally, it is recommended to install gas cylinders in well-ventilated areas, away from heat sources like stoves, to minimize accident risks.
