Governador Valadares City Council Appeals Mayor's Reinstatement to Supreme Court

The Municipal Chamber of Governador Valadares has filed an appeal with the Supreme Federal Court (STF) challenging the decision that reinstated Mayor Coronel Sandro (PL) to his position. This appeal follows an injunction granted by Minister Flávio Dino, which suspended the effects of the mandate's revocation. The City Council argues that its appeal, submitted with a request for urgent review, aims to protect the autonomy of the Municipal Legislative Power and uphold the decision made by the councilors' plenary during the political-administrative process that led to the mayor's impeachment. While respecting judicial decisions, the Chamber believes there are significant legal grounds to revise the preliminary measure and is committed to defending the validity of the plenary's deliberation and the political will of the elected representatives. Mayor Coronel Sandro officially resumed his duties on Tuesday, March 21st, after Minister Flávio Dino identified procedural nullities in the case handled by the Chamber. The magistrate found that the Legislative branch had failed to follow the proper procedure outlined in Decree-Law No. 201/1967. The case will now be reviewed by the STF's First Panel, which will determine whether to uphold Minister Dino's decision or accept the City Council's arguments, potentially leading to another change in the mayor's office. Until a final judgment, Sandro remains in office and has begun dismissing the entire secretariat appointed by the interim mayor, announcing an audit of actions taken in the past 60 days.
