Hasan Abidur Reza Jewel, King of Romantic-Sad Ballads, Dies at 56

Hasan Abidur Reza Jewel, a prominent Bangladeshi singer known for his melancholic romantic songs, passed away on July 30, 2024, after a long battle with cancer. He was 56. Jewel rose to fame in the 1990s with his unique voice, which conveyed a gentle sadness and a profound sense of longing, quickly making him a beloved figure in the 'romantic-sad' ballad genre. His career began with the release of his debut album 'Kuasha Prohor' in 1993, musically directed by the legendary Ayub Bachchu, who also guided Jewel's artistic direction. Bachchu recognized Jewel's talent for singing sad, romantic songs and encouraged him to pursue this niche. Jewel's second album, 'Ek Bikel' (1994), brought him immense popularity, earning him the moniker 'Ek Bikeler Jewel'. He went on to release numerous successful albums, including 'Amar Ache Ondhokar' (1995), 'Ekta Manush' (1996), and 'Dekha Hobe Na' (1997), solidifying his status as a leading artist. Despite his success, Jewel consciously chose to step back from the forefront of the music scene, prioritizing his independence as an artist. He believed that maintaining a separate career would prevent his music from being dictated by commercial interests, allowing him to create music from the heart rather than solely for livelihood. Alongside his singing career, Jewel was also involved in television program production, hosting, and event management, ensuring his financial security and artistic freedom. He was diagnosed with liver cancer in 2011, which later spread to his lungs and bones, leading to a 13-year struggle with the disease. Jewel is survived by his wife and one daughter.
