How Identical Twins Are Formed and Their Possible Gender Combinations

Twins are a rare occurrence, and their formation can result in three primary gender combinations: two boys, two girls, or one boy and one girl. The determination of whether twins will occur and their gender composition is established early in gestation, dependent on the fertilization process within the mother's womb. Typically, a woman releases one egg per month, which is fertilized by a sperm to form an embryo. However, under certain unusual circumstances, if two eggs are released simultaneously and fertilized by different sperm, the resulting twins can be of opposite genders. In cases where two separate eggs are fertilized, even if they result in same-sex twins, there will be minor genetic differences between them due to their distinct origins. Alternatively, if a single fertilized egg splits into two at an early stage of development, the twins will be genetically identical and of the same sex. These are known as identical or Siamese twins, who share an identical genetic makeup and appearance. Sometimes, Siamese twins are born conjoined, requiring surgical separation after birth. Due to these complexities, Siamese twins are relatively uncommon.
