Invasive Red-Eared Slider Turtles Threaten Hatirjheel Ecosystem

Hatirjheel, a significant aquatic ecosystem within Dhaka, faces a new threat from the invasive Red-Eared Slider turtle, in addition to existing water pollution concerns. Originally introduced as ornamental aquarium pets, these turtles are now frequently observed in various parts of the lake. Experts warn that if not controlled promptly, they could pose a serious danger to native turtle species and other aquatic life. The Red-Eared Slider is known for its ability to blend easily with the environment, facilitating its rapid spread. These turtles spend considerable time basking in the sun on roots or floating debris, and are often seen swimming slowly in the greenish water. Wildlife conservationists and biodiversity experts express concern that, similar to the impact of invasive suckerfish, these turtles could become a major ecological crisis for native aquatic systems if their proliferation is not managed. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has cautioned against releasing these turtles into natural habitats, stating on its website that they can damage local ecosystems when introduced outside their native range.
