Irish Musician and Oscar Winner Glen Hansard Dies in Solo Motorcycle Accident

Irish musician and Oscar winner Glen Hansard, aged 56, has died in a single-vehicle motorcycle accident. The incident occurred early this morning near Dublin, Ireland, with the exact cause still under investigation by the police. Hansard was widely recognized as the former frontman of the Irish rock band The Frames and a member of the duo The Swell Season. He also gained international acclaim for his acting role as a street musician in the 2017 film "Once." His original song "Falling Slowly" from the film, co-written with Czech pianist Markéta Irglová, earned them an Academy Award for Best Original Song. Hansard, whose music was influenced by artists like Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, and Leonard Cohen, had been performing solo since 2012 and released seven studio albums, with his latest work appearing this year. His album "Didn't He Ramble" received a Grammy nomination in 2016. He recently performed in Utrecht, Netherlands, in early May. His management expressed profound shock and sorrow over the "tragic loss," while Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin lauded Hansard's significant contributions to Ireland's cultural landscape. Beginning his career as a teenage street performer in Dublin, Hansard founded The Frames in 1990 and later formed The Swell Season with Irglová. He was also noted for a widely shared performance of Shane MacGowan's "Fairytale of New York" at MacGowan's funeral in late 2023. Described by RTE as one of Ireland's most celebrated musicians, Hansard is survived by his wife and three-year-old son, whose birth he described as life-changing.
