Jamaat-e-Islami Chief Warns MPs on Ethics and Discipline

Shafiqur Rahman, the chief of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, has cautioned party members serving as Members of Parliament (MPs) regarding their ethics, organizational discipline, and responsible conduct. He instructed them to refrain from financial and other temptations and to play a responsible role both inside and outside of Parliament. The meeting took place on Monday at the Al Falah auditorium adjacent to the party's central office in Maghbazar, Dhaka, with elected and reserved women MPs. The three-hour session, from 10 AM to 1 PM, was also attended by members of Jamaat's central executive council. Party sources indicated the meeting was organized to provide guidance on the responsibilities, behavior, and organizational discipline of the MPs. The discussion prioritized maintaining ethical standards. Rahman emphasized adherence to the organization's ideological teachings, values, and the strict observance of its constitution. He clarified that being an MP does not grant special privileges and that everyone will be judged by the same ethical standards. MPs were also directed to act responsibly within and outside Parliament and to maintain organizational discipline, advising them to be vigilant about their surroundings and related activities. The meeting also addressed how the activities of Jamaat leaders are discussed in the media and on social media. Some attendees noted that accusations against Jamaat leaders quickly gain traction online and in the press, unlike similar accusations against members of the ruling party. Consequently, the Jamaat chief stressed the need for utmost caution in personal conduct, financial dealings, and organizational activities to avoid damaging public trust and the party's reputation. Rahman requested detailed information about the personal assistants, drivers, and close associates appointed by the MPs to be submitted to the central office. MPs were also advised against making statements in Parliament, the media, or at party events without sufficient information. Rahman urged them to enhance their knowledge of national and international affairs, parliamentary procedures, lawmaking, and public interest issues, while also maintaining regular contact with constituents and raising their concerns in Parliament. A member of the central executive council present at the meeting highlighted the importance of building an effective bridge between the public and party members, urging MPs to improve their parliamentary performance, fulfill their organizational duties, and actively meet public expectations.
