Judge Grants Temporary Custody of Child to Father Amid Mother's Marriage to Accused Thiago Brennand

A São Paulo court has issued a preliminary ruling granting temporary custody of a child to the father, Amilton Augusto da Silva Júnior, following the mother's marriage to Thiago Brennand. The decision by Judge Eduardo Palma Pellegrinelli of the 12th Family and Succession Court of the Central Civil Court of the capital came after lawyer Karina Kufa married Brennand on July 2nd. Brennand, who is currently imprisoned since 2023, faces numerous serious criminal accusations involving extreme cruelty, which have received significant media attention. Kufa is part of Brennand's defense team for these criminal cases. The judge expressed concern that maintaining the child's primary residence with the mother might not serve the child's best interests given the grave nature of the accusations against Brennand. The court's decision is provisional and pending further proceedings, including the presentation of evidence and a review of the urgent relief request. However, the judge deemed the potential severity of the allegations warranted an immediate measure to protect the child. Consequently, the boy will remain with his father after his vacation period with him, instead of returning to his mother's home. The father is also authorized to enroll the child in a São Paulo school. Kufa has five days to respond to the urgent relief request, after which the court will conduct a thorough review, including a psychological evaluation of the father and his partner to assess their suitability to meet the child's needs and if the change in residence is in the minor's best interest. The child's custody was previously shared, with the mother's home designated as the reference point by an agreement approved on March 19, 2026.
