London sees record 752 migrant arrivals in one day

London recorded a new daily high of 752 migrant arrivals on a single day this year, surpassing the previous record of 710 set on June 15. The all-time record for daily entries into the UK remains 1,305, established in early September 2022. These increased crossings via the English Channel have coincided with tragic incidents, including the deaths of four migrants during rescue operations off the French coast near Dunkirk and Hardelot. French authorities reported the recovery of bodies following the capsizing of several boats. Despite the recent surge, the cumulative number of migrants crossing the Channel in small boats this year has surpassed 13,300, representing a decrease of approximately 45% compared to the same period in 2025. Trafficking networks are employing tactics such as launching numerous boats simultaneously, described as a "total assault," to overwhelm border enforcement. This occurs alongside strong bilateral cooperation between the UK and France. Migrant boats are increasingly overcrowded, with one inflatable vessel recently carrying 152 people. A mutual return agreement, in effect until October, mandates that undocumented migrants crossing from France be returned, provided the UK admits a refugee or asylum seeker from France through legal routes. This policy, initiated by former UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron last year, aims to disrupt human trafficking by demonstrating that irregular crossings lead to immediate return and that safe, legal pathways exist. The majority of migrants crossing the Channel originate from conflict-ridden or authoritarian countries like Eritrea, Afghanistan, Sudan, Iran, and Somalia. Irregular immigration control is a highly sensitive and debated issue in UK politics. While the Labour government highlights the overall decrease in arrivals for 2026, opposition parties and critics argue that the reduction is insufficient and that traffickers have merely adapted by using larger boats.
