Luiz Carlos Barreto, a towering figure in Brazilian cinema, passed away at the age of 98. Known affectionately as Barretão, he was hospitalized at Hospital Copa Star in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, at the time of his death, with the cause not yet disclosed. Barreto is widely regarded as one of the most significant names in the history of Brazilian filmmaking. He was a key figure in the Cinema Novo movement, which revolutionized Brazilian cinema in the 1960s with socially and politically charged works. His prolific career spanned over six decades, during which he produced, directed, and photographed numerous seminal films, including "Vidas Secas" and "Terra em Transe." Beyond his cinematic contributions, Barreto also held a degree in Letters and worked as a journalist and photojournalist. His passing has prompted widespread tributes from artists, colleagues, and family members. Actor Matheus Nachtergaele expressed deep sadness, emphasizing that Brazilian cinema, and his own career, would not be the same without Barreto's influence.
