Lula Campaign Bets on Centrão Neutrality, Seeks Center Voters Amidst Bolsonaro Family Feud

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's (PT) campaign team anticipates that most parties within the Centrão bloc will remain neutral in the upcoming presidential election. Campaign coordinators, after consultations with party leaders, believe that the Progressistas, União Brasil, and Republicanos parties will not endorse PL candidate Flávio Bolsonaro, opting instead to allow their members to decide independently in their respective states. The campaign also expects the MDB to maintain neutrality. For the PSD, which has its own candidate, former governor Ronaldo Caiado, the expectation is for support for Lula in certain states, such as Bahia. The Centrão, an informal coalition of center and center-right parties, holds significant influence in Congress. Analysts within Lula's campaign suggest that the current political landscape, with Flávio Bolsonaro as the right-wing candidate, is more favorable than if Tarcísio de Freitas had been chosen, as the latter might have unified these parties. The campaign advises President Lula to capitalize on the internal crisis within Flávio Bolsonaro's campaign and shift focus from polarization to appealing to centrist voters. The crisis stems from a public dispute between Flávio Bolsonaro and former First Lady Michelle Bolsonaro, who accused him of mistreatment. While former President Jair Bolsonaro's public message aimed to unite his base, it exacerbated tensions within Michelle's faction. This internal conflict has also raised the possibility of legal challenges regarding Bolsonaro's house arrest conditions, as his son's use of social media to publish his father's letter could be seen as a violation of court orders. Jair Bolsonaro is currently under house arrest until March 24, 2026, serving a sentence for his involvement in the 2022 coup plot, with restrictions including electronic monitoring and a ban on social media use. Michelle Bolsonaro has since resigned as president of PL Mulher, and reconciliation between her and Flávio Bolsonaro is deemed unlikely by PL leadership.
