Man Arrested for Torturing and Killing Community Dog in Espírito Santo

A community dog named Bianca was brutally tortured and killed with a machete and piece of wood by a man in Dores do Rio Preto, in the South of Espírito Santo, Brazil, on Sunday, August 26th. The animal was found with severe injuries, including numerous bruises and cuts to the head. According to police, the suspect lured the dog to his residence and subjected it to a violent assault. He was later filmed dragging the still-alive animal through the street before abandoning it in a trash can in the Bom Jardim neighborhood. Despite being rescued and taken to a veterinary hospital, Bianca succumbed to her extensive injuries, which included severe head trauma, significant blood loss leading to hypothermia, and extremely weak respiration. Veterinarians were unable to perform surgery due to the dog's critical condition. A resident reported the crime, leading to the suspect's arrest by Military Police. He was apprehended without resistance in the central region of the municipality and taken to the Alegre police station. The incident highlights Brazil's stricter animal cruelty laws, specifically the 'Lei Sansão' (Law 14.064/2020), which mandates prison sentences of two to five years, a fine, and potential loss of animal custody for crimes against dogs and cats. This law, enacted in 2020, significantly increased penalties from the previous legislation.
