Man Convicted of Animal Cruelty for Mutilating Dog with Brush Cutter in Brazil

A court in Rondônia, Brazil, has convicted a man for animal cruelty after he attacked a Blue Heeler dog with a brush cutter in March. The attack, which occurred in Colorado do Oeste, resulted in severe injuries to the dog's face, neck, mouth, and tongue, including partial amputation of the tongue due to necrosis. The dog survived the incident and has since been adopted. The convicted man received a sentence of 4 years, 1 month, and 22 days of imprisonment, to be served under an open regime, and he has been granted the right to appeal while free. He was also ordered to pay over R$14,000 in damages. This includes R$4,234 for material damages to cover veterinary expenses and R$10,000 for collective moral damages. The court also permanently revoked his ownership of the dog, whose custody was officially granted to the resident who had been caring for him. The dog was found by rescuers in a severely underweight condition, tied up in the sun with a short rope, infested with ticks and fleas, and lacking food and water, indicating prior neglect. The veterinarian noted that the dog was already suffering from mistreatment before the brush cutter attack.
